What is National Spritz Day?

Spritz celebration

National Spritz Day, celebrated annually on August 1st, is a homage to the beloved spritz cocktail — a refreshing blend that has become synonymous with convivial gatherings and warm summer days.

The Origins of the Spritz

The spritz's history dates back to the 1800s in the Veneto region of Italy, during the Austro-Hungarian Empire's influence. Austrian soldiers, finding the local Italian wines too robust, began diluting them with a “spritz” (German for “splash”) of soda water — thus giving birth to the spritz cocktail.

Evolution and Popularity

Over time, the spritz evolved to include bitter liqueurs like Aperol and Campari. Aperol, created in 1919, became the star of the Venetian Spritz in the 1950s. Its vibrant hue and bittersweet flavour boosted its popularity worldwide.

The classic Aperol Spritz follows a 3-2-1 recipe: three parts prosecco, two parts Aperol, and one part soda water, garnished with an orange slice.

Spritz in Contemporary Culture

The spritz has become more than a drink — it's a lifestyle. Refreshing, photogenic, and low in alcohol, it's perfect for brunches, sunsets, and aperitivo hours everywhere.

So — what day is National Spritz Day? It’s always 1st August. Cheers to that!
